Summary

Yet to understand where Gutts' monstrous strength comes from? The climax is just shattering。 The Count, in a moments hesitation doesn't make the call which saves his daughter。 Only for her to end up hating Gutts' even more。 It isn't surprising that innocent humans would choose tyranny if it gives them momentary relief from enduring the pain that comes when they fight tyranny。 Theresia wants to be a victim, to avoid the pain of being free from it。 Yet to understand where Gutts' monstrous strength comes from? Well, it's a number of things。 First of all, and this is likely something that is more intertwined with manga than traditional Western comics, but there isn't much storytelling throughout the first volume。 Or rather, story telling through words。 There are far more panels with no words, than with。 I always wax lyrical here about world building, and lore, and above all, telling a compelling story。 Well, whilst I don't dispute the power a picture has to transcend language at times。 It happens far too much here for my liking, and with what are usually, overly bloated, difficult to follow fight scenes。 To me, it is always the lead up to a fight scene, and the aftermath where the true power of a story is。 Berserk Volume one seems to do the exact opposite of this, with very little in the way of a build or follow up, and instead, we get page, after page, after page, of fight scenes, which Ii frequently struggled to tell exactly what was going on half the time。 Maybe its me needing to get used to the more anime style of fight artwork in manga, or maybe Miura just wasn't quite bringing his A game yet (as some of the other artwork would testify too, but I found it all rather confusing and unrewarding。 but most of all, the thing I liked the least about this book is … Puck! that's right, that annoying little character, used as an annoying narrative device and the supposed heart, and comic relief to the story。 I say supposed, as nothing he ever said or did was anything more than god awful, and a detriment to whatever was occurring around him。 Yes, it clearly lends itself to a more Japanese sensibility than mine, at least。 But this loathsome little so and so was something I would much rather have seen as small eraser particles, blown off the page and left on the floor。Despite all that, Miura clearly had an idea where he was going with this story, even if it does seem somewhat disjointed and aimless early on。 Though you can't exactly skip this volume, as some of the characters and events here play a role at the start of the second volume, and perhaps even further。 It certainly makes for a tiresome beginning to what could ultimately be, something rather spectacular。 Chalk this one up to a rough start, although one that will pay off rather quickly, as soon as you open Deluxe Volume 2。 3/5OmniBen。 。。。more

I'm gonna try to be sparing with 5 star reviews so this is more of a 4。5, but when a book demands you instantly purchase and start reading the next one then I gotta admit that's pretty damn compelling。 Incredible payoff to one arc and and starts the next one with shock and heartbreak。 Guts is so cool。 I'm gonna try to be sparing with 5 star reviews so this is more of a 4。5, but when a book demands you instantly purchase and start reading the next one then I gotta admit that's pretty damn compelling。 Incredible payoff to one arc and and starts the next one with shock and heartbreak。 Guts is so cool。 。。。more

Finally at the golden arc with a nice segue from the last parts of the preceding volume; it’s well worth the wait。 High-intensity twists that actually got me emotional, usually not that kind of person。 There is also some reflection on humanity and what we’re willing to do to remove pain or agony。 The flashbacks are executed well without much digression from the plot。 It reminds me of how the Odyssey might have stories within the story, or mini subplots that feed back into the main plot line。 The Finally at the golden arc with a nice segue from the last parts of the preceding volume; it’s well worth the wait。 High-intensity twists that actually got me emotional, usually not that kind of person。 There is also some reflection on humanity and what we’re willing to do to remove pain or agony。 The flashbacks are executed well without much digression from the plot。 It reminds me of how the Odyssey might have stories within the story, or mini subplots that feed back into the main plot line。 The art is very impressive, whilst Guts seems far more multifaceted than he did in Volume 1。 。。。more

This volume was excellent, the story is really starting to become developed。 It's more clear what is happening and I love the back story on Guts at the end。 This volume does leave off on a cliff hanger so I need to get the next volume fast! This was a phenomenal book, the battle between the count in his demonic form and guts goes on and its bold and bloody and then we have the counts daughter arriving and using her as hostage, he kind of distracts him and then continues to pound on him, killing him but he won't die and the sight of it in front of his daughter is bloody until he calls for the Godhand who seem like demonic lords appear and they tell them the story of what happened 7 years ago and the whole scene with what happened to This was a phenomenal book, the battle between the count in his demonic form and guts goes on and its bold and bloody and then we have the counts daughter arriving and using her as hostage, he kind of distracts him and then continues to pound on him, killing him but he won't die and the sight of it in front of his daughter is bloody until he calls for the Godhand who seem like demonic lords appear and they tell them the story of what happened 7 years ago and the whole scene with what happened to Theresia's mother。。 wow that was some twisted and dark thing and we have them telling the count to give his daughter up for more power and while thats happening, Guts wants to take down one member of the Godhand。。his archenemy。。 Griffith and wow that scene was something, things happen and the matter is closed as we sort of get a redemption for the count and Theresia angry at Guts and we flashback to Gut's past in the beginning and what happened to him and his bloody childhood。 This volume was so dark and bloody and brutal and its perfect in a way。 The art is on a whole other level, each panel so well done and the details just <3。 。。。more

Even better than the second volume。 We get a more gradual expansion of the world building and Guts’ motivation。 The dynamics of the earthly and demonic dimensions are touched upon, building this mystery that will carry throughout the series。This volume is also the debut of the first chapter of the much beloved Golden Age arc。The intrigue that Miura has built by beginning with the Black Swordsman arc, and then delving into the Golden Age arc, was a brilliant one。 This allows for the story and wor Even better than the second volume。 We get a more gradual expansion of the world building and Guts’ motivation。 The dynamics of the earthly and demonic dimensions are touched upon, building this mystery that will carry throughout the series。This volume is also the debut of the first chapter of the much beloved Golden Age arc。The intrigue that Miura has built by beginning with the Black Swordsman arc, and then delving into the Golden Age arc, was a brilliant one。 This allows for the story and world building to breathe as we explore this strange, macabre story。 。。。more

Consistent with what most readers say, BERSERK really opens up in this third volume, resolving the story arc that began halfway through volume 1 and going backwards to begin the origin story of the main character who's been mysteriously rampaging through the first two volumes。 Guts, the black swordsman。。。 missing eye, mechanical, weaponized left hand, impossibly huge sword。。。 and a complete jerk。 The accursed hero is unlikeable and not relatable in the first two volumes。 This changes in volume 3 Consistent with what most readers say, BERSERK really opens up in this third volume, resolving the story arc that began halfway through volume 1 and going backwards to begin the origin story of the main character who's been mysteriously rampaging through the first two volumes。 Guts, the black swordsman。。。 missing eye, mechanical, weaponized left hand, impossibly huge sword。。。 and a complete jerk。 The accursed hero is unlikeable and not relatable in the first two volumes。 This changes in volume 3。 This volume right here is where you get hooked。。。 。。。more

The deep dark, violence of action, bursting from the seams gore-fest, incredibly disturbing。。 yet you can't look away and keep wanting more, saga that which is Berserk continues。 There is a time jump within this one, but it is much appreciated。 Like a lot of creative works, Berserk starts off with the first 2。5 volumes somewhere deeper within the timeline。 Towards the end of volume 3, it actually goes back to where the story really begins。。。 the birth of baby Guts and then takes off from there。 The deep dark, violence of action, bursting from the seams gore-fest, incredibly disturbing。。 yet you can't look away and keep wanting more, saga that which is Berserk continues。 There is a time jump within this one, but it is much appreciated。 Like a lot of creative works, Berserk starts off with the first 2。5 volumes somewhere deeper within the timeline。 Towards the end of volume 3, it actually goes back to where the story really begins。。。 the birth of baby Guts and then takes off from there。 Kentaro Miura did an excellent job of transitioning and also the delivery of the 'deeper in the timeline' from Volume 1, 2, and half of 3 were done perfectly as well。 Sometimes, content creators miss this mark and you are left confused on one side or the other。 Like, when your on the deep side of the time line。。 you are asking yourself 'what the hell is going on。。。 well, hopefully it'll all make sense later' 。。。 or, when they flip back to the actual start of the story you are equally confused and/or let down and were enjoying the previous ride。 Not the case here。 #4 here I come! 。。。more

I can definitely appreciate the artwork。 Miura dramatizes emotion and action like no other。 Not sure if I’ll finish the series because I’m not that into violence, death and hell stories but the storyline picked up enough in volumes 2 and 3 that I might keep going。
